We spend a lot of time on this blog talking about ways to get organized and plan for your move, whether it is across town or across the country. We stress how important it is to have moving lists and stay on top of what steps in the process need to be done when.
Unfortunately, even the most organized homeowner can forget to complete certain tasks or even leave behind valuable items in their previous home. Over the course of many years we have seen it all from forgotten appliances to lost keys.
To help you avoid the mistakes of others, here are the top 5 things homeowners forget to do or move on the big day.
# 1 Forgetting to Update Your New Address
One task that is often put aside (or forgotten entirely) until the week before a big move is changing the home address for important documents.
While it may seem like a tedious task to change your address it is critical to not losing personal or sensitive information.
Places you should be sure to contact include:
- Your banking institutions
- Doctors Offices
- Car and Life insurance Providers
- Your Pet’s Vet
- Utilities such as cable, phone, internet provider, water, sewer, and electric
- Your place of employment
- All of your credit card companies
# 2 Forgetting An Essentials Box
The day of any move can be stressful. Once you have arrived at your new home you will want to change your clothes, possibly take a shower and get comfortable. To do this you need to be able to easily find your bathroom items, clothing, and other important items.
Some homeowners are organized enough to know where their essentials are but others need a separate container to easily access these items when they first get into their new home.
Items that we suggest you pack in your essentials include:
- Toilet paper and other hygiene essentials (don’t forget your contact solution)
- Cleaning supplies
- Personal documents
- A change of clothes
- Cords such as phone chargers
- Paper plates and disposable cutlery for a quick meal
# 3 Overlooking Small Kitchen Appliances
The coffee maker and toaster may look so natural on the counter that you may forget them. Often forgotten appliances happen because the homeowner plans to use them the morning of the move, thus the coffee maker and toaster are among the most forgotten appliances.
Don’t forget to look out your back window and see the grill and firepit that need to make it on the moving truck as well.
# 4 Neglecting to Cancelling Things
This may seem like a broad category, but many homeowners forget to cancel things like their gym membership, magazine and newspaper subscriptions, or wine-of-the-month delivery.
Be sure you think about everything you do on a regular basis and add them to your change of address or cancellation list.
# 5 Ignoring Hidden Items
Sometimes out-of-sight-out-of-mind happens to all of us. Many people facing a move forget about things that they don’t see all the time like their jewelry or valuables hidden in the safe in their bedroom closet, the mirror on the back of the door, or the seasonal items up in the corner of the attic.
Save yourself some stress by making sure all hidden spaces are accounted for and checked one last time before you move. For more insights on things homeowners often forget, check out the article “The Stuff Your Always Forget.”
