Winter Moving Tips

Moving at any time of year can be overwhelming, let alone when the temperature has dipped and the weather might not be completely cooperative. Winter is not a prime moving season. The spring and summer tend to be the peak of moving as families hope to get settled before school starts for children and the weather takes a turn for the worse. Protect Your Floors 

Moving during the winter months can mean tracking in snow, ice, and de-icing chemicals that are used on walkways and stairs. Protecting your floors from these products and precipitation is of paramount importance to maintaining the health of the floors and the safety of the walkways to and from the moving trucks.

Prep the Outdoor Entrances and Walkways 

While it is not ideal, moving on the day it snows does happen on occasion. Make sure your walkways, stairs, and entryways are free and clear or anything that could cause a slip and fall. The last  thing you need on moving day is an injury. While you are preparing these areas, you may want to also make sure your personal car is cleared of snow and ice. We will take good care that our trucks are in good working condition, clean, and ready to face whatever weather may occur. 

Rethink Home Heating on Moving Day 

Many homeowners want to make others feel comfortable on moving day, so they turn the heat on especially if it’s cold outside. The truth be told, the doors to your home will be open and you are wasting the energy in heating the home. Our crew and you will probably be toasty warm just walking around, packing, and doing all the tasks involved in the process of moving. 

Plan for Delays 

If the weather isn’t great outside, chances are the traffic may be a little slower and heavier than normal. Plan for a slower than planned travel time to your new location.  If snow is in the forecast just think about the potential backup and adjust your expectations accordingly. Some homeowners opt to reschedule a move if the weather looks extreme, but check with your movers before you make any plans.

5 Must-Do Tasks Before Moving

If you are moving in the near future, your mind is probably filled with “To-Do” lists that can get a bit overwhelming. At Mastodon Moving, we know what that feeling can be like, so we want to help you get organized and stay on track throughout your move. 

Here are 5 of our “Must-Do” tasks that you will want to complete before moving day arrives. 

#1 – Decide on a Moving Date 

For many people facing moving day this decision may seem like an easy one, but there are several factors to take into account. 

Many people choose the day that they sign the lease or mortgage agreement to make the actual move. Consider all the relevant circumstances of your move including: start date of a new job, end of a lease agreement, and close/start of a school year. You may want to adjust your moving date accordingly. For example, if your new home or apartment won’t be ready until shortly after school starts, you may want to put items in short term storage and start your child when the rest of the class starts. It may mean staying in a hotel or temporary housing, but it could be a smart choice.

#2 – Choose a Moving Company 

The sooner you can schedule a mover, the better. Moving companies tend to book up fast, especially around the beginning and end of each month. 

Once you have scheduled a mover, you will be able to get a better idea of what you will need to do for the move. For example, some questions you may have answered are: Does your mover handle high value items? Can your mover help you pack and unpack? Do they handle long distance moves? Does your mover have boxes and storage containers you can use or purchase?

#3- Inform All Utilities and Relevant Companies 

Get yourself organized before the move by making a list of all utilities such as your water company, gas/oil company, cable company, electric company, and all major credit cards to inform them of your change of address. This is also a good time to fill out a change of address form online and let them know which date the transfer of name will occur. 

A few places that many people forget to inform include: a primary care physician, schools, the IRS, DMV, and car/life insurance companies. Don’t forget to send a digital reminder to friends and family right before your move so they have your new address as well. 

If you get newspaper or magazine subscriptions, change the address now to avoid being charged for items that will arrive at the wrong home and probably won’t be forwarded.

#4 Gather Important Documents 

While you are sifting through your past bills, compile a folder or binder that will contain important documents that you will need to bring to your new location. These include: school records, medical records, financial records, and moving documents. Keeping all of these things in one place, along with your important contact numbers, can be a lifesaver when moving. 

#5 – Plan Ahead for Your Pets 

We have mentioned pets in previous blogs and how to help make the move easier for them. Don’t forget to plan in advance to have all the necessary paperwork from the vet transferred, all pet food easily accessible, and any comfort items close at hand that your pet may need during the move. Remember, your pet doesn’t understand why this major upheaval is happening.

Tips to Get You Settled Quickly into Your New Home

Moving can be stressful. The coordinating, packing, cleaning, and organizing can be overwhelming. In your mind, you are probably counting the hours and minutes until you can arrive at your destination and start sorting things out. Thankfully, once you and your belongings have arrived at your new home, there is usually a sense of relief. 

As professional movers, we understand the stress that comes with this upheaval in your life. We also know that there are things that you can do to make the move easier, including the process of getting settled into your new place. Here are a few of our tips to help you adjust and establish your home quickly and with as little stress as possible.

Before the movers come to pack and transport all of your belongings, be sure to make your life infinitely easier upon arrival by packing a few boxes that will be marked “essential items.” These boxes should be placed last in the moving van or may even go separately in an owner’s car. 

An essentials box or boxes should contain personal items that you may need for the first day/night of staying in your new home. This could include: prescription medicines, bathroom necessities, personal items, a change of clothes, and comfort items for your children.

Cleaning Items 

One of the first things that you will want to do once you get into your new digs will be to clean everything from top to bottom including floors, cabinets, bathrooms, and possibly even the walls/ceilings. Start with a clean slate before unpacking anything. Make sure you have a box filled with all the cleaning products you want to use. This will save you a trip to the store upon arriving and can be a great hint to friends and relatives who are helping that you have a list of things to do before you unpack!

One of the things home buyers do when they are house hunting is envision their furnishings in the new place. Once you have signed on the dotted line, ask the previous owners or the real estate agent to get you accurate measurements of each room and windows, so you can better explain to the movers where furnishings should be placed. This could save you a lot of hassle trying to decide which direction and location your bed or couch will face when you are in mid move. Measurements can also help you determine if you have the right window coverings, rugs, and furniture to fit in the rooms properly. 

Create a Priority List 

Once you get into your home, you will have a million things on your mind to get accomplished. Create a priority list that can help you focus and give movers or family members direction in their tasks. 

Of particular importance if you have children, is setting up a place for them to sleep and an area that makes them feel at home. If you can’t unpack their room right away, make sure they have a place to lay their head on the first night and some of their comfort items to play with. 

Also of importance will be having a bathroom that is all unpacked. After a long day of unpacking, you will want to unwind, shower, and relax. Having your bathroom box handy is critical to making that first night less overwhelming. 

Organize Your Paperwork 

Over the course of the first week or two, you will most likely be dealing with handling the transfer of utilities, installation of cable, and other items. Keep track of all the paperwork that goes with this part of the move so you can easily access it later when you have questions. 

Packing didn’t happen overnight in your old place, so don’t expect that the unpacking process will happen fast now. Realize that you can not get it all done right away and give yourself time to make the adjustment. You will get all the boxes unpacked eventually.
